Owen Dodgson was sent off for a rash tackle just two minutes after coming on as a substitute in Mansfield Town's goalless draw with Huddersfield Town. Manager Nigel Clough said the defender had let everyone down and must make up for it over the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old loanee from Stockport County, who had featured five times since arriving in August, was shown a straight red for a lunging challenge on Derensili Sanches Fernandes. The incident occurred in front of 9,000 spectators and left Mansfield to play out the final stages with ten men.
Clough's blunt assessment
Speaking after the match, Clough did not mince his words about the dismissal. He described it as a rash moment and a misjudgement from a youngish player who had been keen to impress. "It's not nice, you've let everybody down and he knows that," Clough said. He added that there had been no prior sign of nastiness from Dodgson, but the immediate consequence was clear.
"Hopefully he'll make up for that in the next eight months," Clough stated, outlining the defender's path to redemption. The manager emphasised that Dodgson's error was particularly costly for his teammates, who had battled for a point.
A point on the road
The draw at the John Smith's Stadium extends Mansfield's recent run to just one win in their last five League One outings, a sequence of form that reads DDLLW. The result leaves them 17th in the table with eight points from seven games, seven points adrift of leaders Bradford.
Their most recent outing was a 2-2 draw at Burton Albion, where Michael Smith and Lucas Akins were on the scoresheet.
Attention now turns to a home match against Leyton Orient this Saturday. Orient currently sit 10th, providing another tough test for Clough's side as they look to climb the standings. The manager will be without Dodgson through suspension for that fixture.
