Owen Dodgson's Mansfield Town debut turned into a nightmare as the defender was sent off just two minutes after coming on as a substitute. The summer loan signing from Stockport County was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Huddersfield's Derensili Sanches Fernandes during Saturday's League One clash, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
A costly cameo
Introduced at half-time for Stephen McLaughlin, Dodgson's afternoon was over almost immediately following the referee's decision. The red card means the defender will now face a mandatory suspension, a blow for a Mansfield side sitting 17th in the table with seven points from six games. The Stags' recent form shows one win, one draw and three losses in their last five outings, a run they will aim to improve upon without the suspended Dodgson.
The fastest reds in history
While Dodgson's dismissal was rapid, it falls short of the League One record for the fastest sending off from the start of a game. That dubious honour belongs to John Marquis, who was shown a red card just 13 seconds into a match for Shrewsbury Town against Peterborough United during the 2024/25 season. Marquis was sent off for an elbow on Sam Hughes, and his team were relegated at the end of that campaign.
English football has seen several other remarkably quick red cards. Goalkeeper Kevin Pressman was sent off 13 seconds into a match for Sheffield Wednesday against Wolves in the 2000/01 second-tier season. Winger Keith Gillespie was dismissed before play even resumed for Sheffield United against Reading in 2007 for an elbow during a throw-in. In 1999, Swansea's Walter Boyd was also sent off before the match restarted following an elbowing incident against Darlington in the old Third Division.
Looking ahead for Mansfield
The immediate focus for Mansfield is coping without Dodgson as they prepare for their next league assignment. Nigel Clough's side travel to face Burton Albion, who are 11th, on Saturday, September 19. The two teams played out a 0-0 draw in their last meeting in April. Mansfield's squad depth will be tested, and supporters can check the latest available players on the squad page. The club will hope to build on the point earned against Huddersfield despite being a man down for most of the second half, a result that leaves them six points behind early leaders Sheffield Wednesday.
