Mansfield's Josh Longood is being hailed a hero for his efforts to restrain an unruly traveler after the man tried to open an emergency exit door mid-flight. The incident happened on May 31 during a Frontier Airlines flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago. Witnesses said after the passenger attempted to open the door on the jetliner, he attacked an off-duty airline employee who tried to intervene. Longood is a former MMA fighter and a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He said when he heard the initial commotion after the man attempted to open the emergency door at 30,000 feet, he knew he had to take decisive action. Longood restrained the man with a seat belt and then assisted other passengers to shackle him with hand ties. The passenger kept trying to slip out of the restraints, and Longood had to control him for another 30 minutes until the plane made an emergency landing in Miami. After the plane landed in Miami, the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Juan Gabriel Reyes, was arrested on a charge of battery for attacking the airline employee. Reyes was also questioned by FBI agents and is now facing federal charges that include interference with flight crew members. Longood said he believes the suspect's dangerous behavior on the flight was fueled by alcohol. Other passengers on the flight are calling Longood a lifesaver and a hero. He said he is just grateful that he was in a position to use his knowledge and training when it mattered most.
